Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) Study

MBS Studies are done on-site by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) in our Radiology suite to assess swallowing difficulties. The appointment takes approximately two hours.

  • A thorough history of the swallowing difficulty is obtained
  • A physical examination of the oral structures is performed
  • The MBS Study is then completed. This is a radiological assessment done under videofluoroscopy where the swallow is filmed in real time.
  • After results are analyzed, the SLP meets with the patient to discuss the outcome of the study and provides education and makes recommendations.
  • A written report is sent to the referring physician.
  • A copy of the report is furnished to the patient upon request.

At this time, Texas NeuroRehab Center does not offer outpatient therapy services to treat swallowing disorders. We are happy to make a referral or the patient may consult their physician regarding follow-up services.
